Just carry on!
This autumn we will celebrate the 10th year of Manzara Istanbul.
The German-Turkish company began with 7 apartments on 15 October 2006. At that time Manzara Istanbul was the only agency, which offered apartments for guests in Istanbul, in the district of Galata. Istanbul was booming: The idea of living in architecturally designed objects, in authentic houses, door to door to local people, enjoyed popularity. In addition to the most beautiful views on the hills of Istanbul, we deliver an all-round service just like in hotels.
As a German-Turkish entrepreneur couple we devoted ourselves to the dialogue between cultures. The many additional offers (guided city tours, cultural events, art exhibitions, culinary evenings etc.) have a strong appeal and also round out the concept nicely. In this way an exciting and interesting network has developed and also we made good friendships.
There was a big demand, so that Manzara needed to expand continuously. At the beginning of 2015 we had 50 apartments in our portfolio. However there was an increasing competitive pressure, especially the unfair competition from AirBnb. At the same time we sensed that we were no longer able to devote ourselves to our idea and philosophy in the desired intensity. Therefore we decided to reduce the number of the apartments. Till autumn 2015 we had 36 apartments left.
The first bombing attack in Ankara in October last year and the changing political mood had an effect on the numbers of booking, so that we were forced to further reduce the number of apartments. After the bombing attack in January there was a first wave of cancellations, the second one after the bombing attack in March made a huge impact. We receive only few new reservations now.
Currently we have 17 apartments in our portfolio. Another downturn cannot be ruled out.
It is not easy to convince people for a trip to Turkey by this political orientation from the Turkish government. According to this development the industry registered great losses; many small companies have had to give up. This will affect Turkey particularly harshly. Many companies are threatening in their existences; the consequences are incalculable, because in addition to the economic disaster there is the still unresolved Kurdish emancipation, which threats to split the country. In the long term this conflict will come-directly or indirectly-to Europe.
Also for several weeks now Germany and Turkey play a dangerous ping-pong game. They attack each other nearly daily and this poisons the relationship between those two countries.
Some people have realized that Erdogan IS NOT Turkey, their interest in this country and in Istanbul is still high. They come and enjoy the city and the hospitality of the Turkish people more than ever. Because Turkey, especially Istanbul, is still the best place for the dialogue between east and west. And Istanbul is a city with sensual beauty which cannot be surpassed.
Many of our regular guests don’t let them persuade for a trip to Turkey, but they write us, that they are still in solidarity with the country and people.
It really motivates us greatly that people express their sympathies and bravery with us.
Therefore we will continue with our “more than ever” campaign and promote the dialogue between the cultures with all the means which are available.
Maybe in this way we can make a little contribution to understanding and to a peaceful coexistence.
If we want to live in a globalized world, misunderstandings and conflicts are preprogrammed. Only the personal encounter with a foreign culture gives us tolerance, respect and acceptance. To avoid those means a great loss for us.
But each problem hosts and opportunity!
We as Manzara Istanbul want to make the attractiveness of Turkey, Istanbul and Ayvalık visible with new, innovative projects.
Many concepts are already ready, so just look forward for it…
There is a strong demand for our vocational house project in Ayvalık, at the Aegean. The danger of attack is nearly excluded there. So this shows us that the fear of possible attacks is still a very important factor.
And all the creative people, who devote themselves to art, will be surprised with a special concept in the innovative district of Galata in Istanbul towards the end of the year…
We as a german-turkish architecture couple will continue to devote us with committment to our visions:
- 1. Construct rooms, which offer guests the opportunity to newly percept their senses and to strengthen their needs and cognition
- 2. Conduct the dialog between cultures, which show everyone how exciting other way of lifes, habits and customs are and show at the same time where our roots lie
We offer a calm and relaxing and a spontanous and creative atmosphere at the same time, which offers everyone, who has mood, to take part and to have a part in the total project.
And also in this we are different than other touristic companies.
As we have heard, the loss of tourists especially threat big hotel’s existence at the Turkish coast.
And it might be that the present development is a possible chance for whole Turkey because the creative and innovative vacation projects can overcome the crisis and be a good example for the development of tourism in the future: away from the mass tourism, back to individuality.
It is to be hoped from heart for this beautiful country in its diversity and the hospital people!
June 2016 – Gabriele Kern-Altindis
This text was written in the middle of June. With the recent sad news from 28th june this text had to be changed again. The title has been changed from “just” to “anyway”, because not only our team, but also our guests face the incidents: at the moment we only have a few cancellations! Determination and courage take all fear and doubt away from us and replace it with trust in the things that we do and on which we will hold with all of our strength!
“In every crisis there is not only a chance, but also an opportunity”, Martin Luther once said. Our hope remains that the politicians continue with a peaceful dialogue or begin a new one and come together! against terrorism.
